Full PIF membership for New Caledonia and French Polynesia [fr]
The Minister for Overseas France, Ericka Bareigts, welcomes the decisions of the member States of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to grant New Caledonia and French Polynesia full membership of the regional organisation. The two territories formerly held associate member status.
This decision, made on the occasion of the 47th Forum held in Pohnpei from the 8th to the 10th of September, will allow for the reinforcement of the two Pacific territories’ integration into the region. It is the result of strong diplomatic activity by France, responding fully to the ambitions expressed at the 4th France-Oceania summit, held at the Elysée Palace in November 2015, as well as during the visit of the Prime Minister to Australia and New Zealand, in May 2016.
The Minister for Overseas France also wishes to pay tribute to the determination and the strength of conviction of Philippe Germain and Edouard Fritch, the respective presidents of New Caledonia and French Polynesia, which allowed for this issue to be moved forward.
