French President receives UNESCO Peace Prize for Mali intervention

On the 5th of June, 2013, the President of the Republic received Alioune Traoré, Executive Secretary of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize, which is awarded annually by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Created by UNESCO in 1989, the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize honours individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution to peace and stability around the world.

The Jury wished to honour “the solidarity demonstrated by France with regard to the African people” and to award M. François Hollande “for his considerable contribution to peace and stability in Africa.”

The President of the Republic is honoured by this award and sincerely thanks UNESCO as well as the Jury of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize. President Hollande will donate the award's monetary prize to two organisations that help mitigate the negative effects of the conflict: the Mali branch of Network on Peace and Security for Women in the ECOWAS Region, which coordinates initiatives by associations of women in favour of peace and of the rehabilitation of conflict zones; and the organisation Solidarité Défense, which helps soldiers injured during missions, and offers long-term support to victims' families.

President Hollande received the award at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

During his acceptance speech, President Hollande praised the strength of UNESCO's work, saying: “When UNESCO practices multilingualism, dear to the French-speaking world, it is true to its mission. When UNESCO puts the emancipation of women at the heart of education, it is exemplary. When it places culture at the heart of its work, it is visionary. When it defends pluralism and access to information everywhere, UNESCO is liberating. So, receiving the Houphouët-Boigny prize here at UNESCO takes on a special meaning.”

2013 French singing competition

On July 6 & 7, take part in the Alliance Française French Singing Competition in Wellington!

Following the success of the Concours de la Chanson in 2011, the Alliance Francaise will again organise the national French singing competition, the Concours de la Chanson Francaise, in partnership with the French Embassy, the New Zealand-France Friendship Fund, the NZ School of Music, the NZ Opera Society and the NZ Association of Singing Teachers.

The Concours de La Chanson aims to promote emerging talents. Open to young singers between the ages of 18 to 30, in 2011 over 30 entries from around the country were received. Many were the pupils of some of New Zealand's finest teachers and singers: Jenny Wollerman, Margaret Medlyn, Flora Edwards, Richard Greager, Isabel Cunningham, Robert Oliver and Dame Malvina Major.

Two internationally acclaimed judges will determine the winners in each section: Classical Melodie and Modern Chanson.
Singing both baritone and bass Roger Wilson, one of New Zealand's most experienced and versatile resident singers has been engaged as a soloist by all New Zealand's major opera companies, orchestras and choirs and is also well known as a recitalist and broadcaster and Franck Monnet who is an award-winning author, composer and performer of numerous albums and has toured France, Italy and Canada.

Mali – Outcome of the donors' conference

Thirteen heads of state and 107 delegations took part in the donors' conference to reaffirm their support for the Malian people and for the sustainable recovery plan adopted by the Malian authorities.

France pledged to pay €280 million bilaterally, in addition to her multilateral contribution. We shall also provide 20% of the European Union's assistance, to the tune of €520 million.

In total, promises of assistance totalling €3.2 billion were confirmed by the participating countries.

Transparency and monitoring mechanisms were established. As the Foreign Minister said on 14 May, the release of aid will go hand in hand with progress in the dialogue and reconciliation process.

This high level of participation and contribution is a success for this conference, which should make it possible to ensure a lasting solution to the Mali crisis.

Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - May 16, 2013

Q : Can you confirm that the €280 million announced by France on Wednesday mainly comes from funds already committed and suspended? What is the exact amount of “new” aid? Finally, what is the proportion of donations and loans in this package?

A : The €280 million in aid announced by France on Wednesday for the 2013-2014 period includes €150 million which was frozen during the crisis. Following the commitments made by Mali with regard to political dialogue and the holding of elections in July, the decision was taken to resume this cooperation. Moreover, all this assistance will be restructured to adapt to the Malian government's new priorities as expressed in the sustainable recovery plan presented in Brussels yesterday. I refer you to the statement made on that day.

By comparison, France's Official Development Assistance to Mali before the crisis amounted to about €50 million a year.

In answer to your third question, the package is divided equally between donations and loans.

Roland Garros: Where French charm and clay-court tennis meet

From 21 May to 9 June 2013, the world's top tennis players will battle it out for the title of French Open champion at Roland Garros in Paris. For superstars like Nadal, Djokovic, Llodra and Gasquet as well as spectators from the world over, Roland Garros is not just another tennis tournament - it is a showcase for all of France.

The French Open is one of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments, along with Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open. Organised by the French Tennis Federation, it is the only Grand Slam tournament to be played on clay.

Since the first tournament held at Porte d'Auteuil, Paris in 1928, the aura of Roland Garros has increased year on year, with dazzling sporting achievements and the biggest names in international tennis. Due to the immense success of the "Four Musketeers" (Borota, Brugnon, Cochet and Lacoste) in the early days of French professional tennis, the tournament quickly became a global event. In 1968, it was, in fact, the first Grand Slam tournament to allow both amateurs and professionals to compete. Since then, the feats of players like Björn Borg, Mats Wilander and Gustavo Kuerten have lived long in the memory. From a French perspective, however, it is Yannick Noah's victory in 1983 that is most fondly remembered.

A profitable enterprise

Today, the tournament's success is built on the almost 10,000 people working every day to organise it, as well as long-standing sponsors such as BNP Paribas, which has been an official partner for 40 years and Lacoste, which this year celebrates the 80th anniversary of its famous “green crocodile” polo shirt.

“For the French Tennis Federation, Roland Garros is a profitable enterprise which allows us to maintain the tournament and fund all French competitions,” explains Christophe Fagniez, the tournament's Director of Operations. “We reinvest over €20 million in the Federation each year.” Total turnover for the 2013 tournament should reach €160 million, mostly from TV rights, public relations events and partnerships. Ticket sales account for about €29 million.

The charm of Roland Garros

For the players, the main objective is clearly to win the tournament and go down in the history of tennis, but Roland Garros also enables them to experience a unique tennis environment. "Winning at Roland Garros carries real prestige, but even taking part gives players an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Noah, Agassi and all the big names of world tennis – all the while surrounded by the charms of Paris," explains Fagniez. As of this year, the tournament organisers have decided to increase the competition's total prize money, with all players earning 15% more than in 2012. A total of €22 million will be paid out, bringing the French Open in line with its rivals.

While 80% of the spectators are French, more and more foreign visitors and media can be seen each year. Coverage of the tournament and thus of France is provided by 137 global broadcasters and over 1,300 accredited journalists. “There is clearly a Roland Garros effect,” says the Director of Operations. “The visitors want to enjoy the tennis, but also the setting. This is a historic tournament ideally located at the gateway to Paris, with an enchanting view of the Eiffel Tower.”

Need for modernisation

For this 83rd edition, the world's biggest clay-court tournament is undergoing something of a facelift in order to better meet the needs of both players and spectators. The organisers are working to further improve conditions for the 430,000 expected visitors and the 128 male and 128 female players in the main draws: enhancing the green spaces, improving signposting and phasing out regular admission tickets in favour of e-tickets in order to facilitate movement within the stadium.

But the most significant improvements are still to come in the form of the stadium's development project, which should be completed by 2018. This involves upgrading the facilities to cater for more spectators, introducing night sessions and installing a roof on the Philippe Chatrier Court. “We must retain the charm of Roland Garros. This modernisation is clearly needed within the next five to six years, as unlike the other Grand Slam tournaments, we cannot compete in terms of size,” says Christophe Fagniez.

Georges Michel : Officier de l'Ordre national du Mérite

On Monday the 22nd of April, Georges Michel was awarded the medal of Officier de l'Ordre national du Mérite at a reception hosted by H.E. Mr. Francis Etienne at the residence of France.

Awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite medal on the 14th of July 2002, Mr. Michel was elevated to Officier in recognition of his services to France. He award reception was attended by the two French senators on visit to New Zealand, Mr Christophe-André Frassa and Mr Christian Cointat.

Born in Réunion, an overseas department of France, Mr. Michel arrived in New Zealand in 1997 after a distinguished career with time spent working within the tourism, automotive and wine industries. In 1998, along with his wife and two children, Mr. Michel settled in New Zealand after having established Georges Michel Wine Estate in Blenheim in 1997. He now manages the property with his daughter, Swan, winemaker. Alongside this prospering business, Mr. Michel volunteers as an official translator for the Blenheim Police and as a translator for Wairau Blenheim hospital.

Un homme c'est un parcours, une histoire et quelques secrets. Une remise de distinction, c'est l'occasion de les évoquer, ce parcours cette histoire et ses secrets, sans tout divulguer car tout n'est jamais totalement révélé.

Vu de l'hexagone, le parcours et l'histoire de Georges sont un exemple de pur français établi hors de métropole, qui a conduit sa vie à la force de sa volonté, en empruntant un itinéraire de mouvement permanent. Sa géographie personnelle est celle du lointain avec des savoirs acquis au fil des expériences et des latitudes ;

On part de La Réunion ou il est né le 27 juillet 1954, on y reste presque 45 ans jour pour jour mais on oscille souvent entre St Denis et Paris (merci au CNPF devenu MEDEF) où Nice (c'est la que vit votre mère) où Grandmont dans le Beaujolais à partir de 1993. On oscille aussi entre La Réunion et Madagascar. Puis, dans les années 90, on regarde à l'Orient et on arrive en Nouvelle-Zélande en 1997, où vous vous êtes établi avec votre famille depuis 1998.

Vous êtes un véritable entrepreneur (de ceux qui ne s'arrêtent jamais), un chef qui impulse, un décideur franc qui parle droit et sait aussi dire non.

Vous commencez dans l'entreprise familiale de manutention portuaire à St Denis, vous avez 19 ans. Vous apprenez le métier à la base, sans ménagement et sans perdre de temps, après avoir obtenu votre baccalauréat à Nice.

De 1976 à 2002 vous allez diversifier vos activités vers le tourisme, la gestion hôtelière, la location automobile et la production viticole d'abord dans le Beaujolais puis en Nouvelle-Zélande. Plus qu'un métier, le vin est aujourd'hui votre raison d'être et, satisfaction suprême, vous l'avez transmise.

Georges is a constant traveller, running the world but calling New Zealand (as well as France) home. Spending long periods of time, I imagine, in planes. There's a lot of thinking during those long hauls, lots of projects for an ambitious mind like yours. Lot of time to savour some great wines 33, 000 feet above us, I will come back on that.

Georges is now anchored in the South Pacific, having himself become a Kiwi (and so effectively some French winemakers visiting are bluffed). Georges is living in Blenheim producing fantastic wines from his local estate (you can enjoy them tonight be it Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir). South Pacific is also the world of his son now working in Sydney after 7 years in Los Angeles and of his daughter, a reputed oenologist married to a gifted Aussie who happens to be also a wine specialist. She can't be here tonight because of her devotion to duty but for those of you who don't know her, look at the advertising for Domaine Georges Michel in the good magazines and you will understand why a father can be proud of his daughter.

J'ai parlé des secrets, j'en évoquerai 3

Premier secret : son visage.

Georges l'ignore mais il est la réincarnation d'un portrait de Lucas Cranach que mon dentiste avait accroché dans son cabinet de façon que le patient sur son fauteuil de douleur, le garde toujours sous les yeux ; dans cette peinture, l'homme est coiffé d'un béret noir mais c'est le même regard inquisiteur et farouche au-delà de l'horizon, le meme vaste front, le même collier de barbe soulignant un menton décidé, la même impression que vous toise un guerrier prêt au combat.

Georges, si vous m'avez vu marquer un léger recul lors de notre première rencontre à Marlborough, c'était la stupéfaction de retrouver face à moi, en chair et en os, le portrait de la renaissance de mon enfance.

Et vous, mesdames et messieurs, vous ne saviez pas pourquoi son visage est à la fois sévère et drôle, autoritaire mais bienveillant, scrutateur mais ironique. Maintenant, vous comprenez : officier, il l'était - déjà - il y a 450 ans.

Deuxième secret : sa venue en Nouvelle-Zélande. On n'y vient jamais par hasard, même de St Denis de La Réunion. On a des bonnes raisons pour cela et j'en supposerais au moins deux :

Un endroit où faire librement du bon vin,
Un atavisme insulaire car, quand on est natif d'une île du sud qu'on aime vivre sur une île, on peut changer d'île mais on reste sur une île, du sud.

Je laisse à Georges le soin de nous en dire plus, peut-être.

Third secret: his commitment to the community. In fact, half a secret for his relatives but I would like just for a minute to shed a light on that aspect of his personality, because it is a reflection of a core value in our National Order of Merit.

Georges acts as an official translator for the Blenheim police and helps French guys in trouble. More important - because it is sometimes hugely time consuming - he is also a translator for the Wairau Blenheim hospital and supports French people hospitalised. These are voluntary tasks.

On mesure le succès à des chiffres mais aussi à des signes. J'en citerai un : lors de mon dernier voyage à Paris j'ai choisi une compagnie asiatique qui a quelques avantages, j'en ai découvert un nouveau : elle offre du Georges Michel à ses passagers. J'ai pu, a mon tour, méditer à 33,000 pieds d'altitude le plaisir particulier qui est le votre, de déguster votre vin à côté d'un Château-Margaux ou d'un Châteauneuf du pape. In vino veritas.

Mesdames et messieurs, Georges Michel est entré dans l'Ordre national du Mérite le 14 juillet 2002 lorsque Jacky Musnier lui a remis ses insignes de Chevalier.

Ce soir, ses nouveaux mérites étant établis, substantiels et exemplaires, il est normal qu'une étape soit franchie et c'est un honneur pour l'Ambassadeur de lui remettre les insignes de son élévation au grade d'Officier.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Michel thanked New Zealanders and especially the people of Blenheim represented on the night by their mayor, Alistair Sowman, who travelled especially to celebrate the occasion. He also paid special tribute to his wife who supported him in his ventures.

French artists exhibited at Auckland Triennial

From 10 May to 11 August, six French artists have their works featured in Auckland Triennial: “If you were to live here…”

The Auckland Triennial is New Zealand's premier international contemporary art exhibition. The 5th Auckland Triennial, “If you were to live here...”, led by acclaimed international curator Hou Hanru, includes works by more than 30 New Zealand and international artists, collectives and architects.

Presented at Auckland Art Gallery and eight additional sites across Auckland, the triennial presents works by six French artists.

Hou has an extensive record curating triennials, biennials and exhibitions internationally, from exhibitions in San Francisco and Madrid to the top biennales of Istanbul, Venice and Lyon. His name is synonymous with the rise of contemporary art across China and East Asia from the nineties until today.
Now living in both the United States and France, Hou Hanru is at the forefront of the French contemporary art scene, and he brings to New Zealand a fantastic selection of works by French artists:

Festival of Europe: focus on youth/ Debate with young French people on the future of Europe

Thierry Repentin, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, wanted the Festival of Europe to focus on youth, a priority for President Hollande. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, he will meet, on May 9, with the representatives of the European Youth Parliament as well as French lycée students who participated in a European election campaign simulation. It will provide an opportunity to highlight the European initiatives promoted by France aimed at responding to youth concerns.

Mr. Repentin will attend a presentation of the “Eurolycées” project organized by the “Association Civisme et Démocratie” (Citizenship and Democracy Association) at the European Parliament Information Office in France alongside European deputies. On this occasion, the minister delegate will exchange views with the lycée students on Europe. The “Eurolycées” project allowed lycée students to develop ideas and recommendations on the EU's energy and environmental future during European election campaign simulations.

At 3:00 pm at the Maison de l'Europe in Paris, Mr. Repentin will exchange views with members of the European Youth Parliament. Some of the areas that this Parliament has worked on include citizenship, youth employment, housing, agriculture, energy policy and economic recovery.

Mr. Repentin will also meet with associations working to promote the “European Year of Citizens” and with visitors to the European Village on the square in front of Paris City Hall, as part of the inauguration of the “Faites l'Europe” program.

Lastly, at 5:30 pm he will respond to questions from monde.fr readers during an online debate.

Leading-edge economic sectors: France's trump card

With a GDP of 2,033.7 billion euros, France ranks as the fifth world economy and second at European level. Positions sustained by the performances of certain business sectors, symbolic of France's influence abroad. In 2012, according to Fortune magazine, which classifies businesses according to size of turnover, 32 French businesses figured among the top 500.

In France, certain economic sectors stand out and look likely to produce growth in 2013. The figures for the aeronautics and space industry are particularly remarkable in this respect.

The agreement recently concluded between Arianespace and the Australian authorities for the launch of two satellites is evidence of French expertise in satellite technology too.

In aeronautics, Airbus stands out as the main player with 588 aircraft delivered to 89 customers and 833 sales in 2012. These results have enabled it to pursue its recruitment policy with the creation of 5,000 jobs, half of them in France.

But the sector also has intermediate size players. The Zodiac company specialises in the supply of aircraft equipment. Safran produces a large range of equipment, notably to Airbus, but also to Boeing, Bombardier, Embraer, Sukhoï, etc.. The industrial group has achieved record sales in aircraft and helicopter engines. In total, this significant industry produced a trade surplus of 20.3 billion euros in 2012.

France's brand image abroad

France is also influential worldwide thanks to its assets in the food and agricultural sector. The land of gastronomy and of the International Agricultural Show, France is recording growing sales in this sector, with a trade surplus of 11.5 billion euros. In the dairy sector, Lactalis and Danone rank 2nd and 3rd in the world respectively. In spirits, Pernod Ricard is the second most important company. Even the Breton cooperative Triskalia, specialising in poultry, made its way into the “Deloitte Technology Fast 50” ranking, an event set up and organised by Deloitte, one of the biggest global auditing and consultancy companies.

In the agricultural sector, France beat the export record for seeds and plants in 2012, with a total sum of 1.2 billion euros, according to figures published by the French National Interprofessional Association for Seeds and Plants.

The luxury market is also defying the crisis, showing a two-figure growth in 2012 for the third consecutive year. French companies such as the world leader LVMH or Rémy Cointreau, dominate the international market and are paying particular attention to the Asian market. Over 12% of the takings of French luxury houses now come from China. In 2020, this market will be the world leader, ahead of the United States and Japan. The luxury market in France employs nearly 100,000 people today.

Health and technology, flourishing industries

France is also prominent in the health field, notably with Sanofi, one of the top world laboratories. According to figures from the Leem federation, the pharmaceutical industries realise a turnover of 49.52 billion euros and a trade surplus of 5.34 billion euros.
Overall, the French pharmaceutical market represents 4.8% of the world market. And the sector is unlikely to cease growing in the years to come. Progress in medical technology and the rapid growth of nanotechnologies may prove to be the mainsprings of the “next industrial revolution”.

It is also in this sector that the Medtech company made a name for itself in 2012. Its CEO, Bertin Nahum, was ranked the fourth most revolutionary entrepreneur by Canadian magazine Discovery Series. His company designs, develops and markets a new generation of robotic surgical assistance technology.

The high-tech sector is equally important. Last December the CAC 40, the benchmark stock exchange index on the Paris Bourse, hailed the entry of Gemalto on the index. This leader in digital security boasted a record turnover of 2.2 billion euros in 2012, operations in around a hundred countries and over 10,000 employees, 1,500 of them engineers working in research and development. It is an industry with strong recruitment potential, according to the Ministry of the Economy, which estimates that 450,000 jobs will be created in this sector between now and 2015.

World Trends Program 2013

The call for applications for the 2013 World Trends program, organised by the World Cultures Institute in Paris, is now open.

From November 18 to 29 2013 (inclusive), around 100 French-speaking cultural managers from all over the world will be offered the chance to develop their insight of the professional network and of French cultural trends, and also to establish new contacts in Paris and throughout France.

Welcoming professionals from abroad to France is one of the key international areas of action of the Ministry of Culture and Communication (in French). Because it helps build long-term networks for exchange, this policy meets one of France's primary goals: the promotion of cultural diversity. It takes the form of visits, internships and training programs in every cultural sector.

The most frequently requested fields include cultural management and administration, books and reading, decorative and fine arts, museums, audio-visual and multimedia, performing arts, archives, heritage, publishing, libraries, architecture and city planning.
This program, set up and administered by the Institute for World Cultures, receives the support of the European and International Affairs Department as well as that of the various specialized Divisions of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. It also relies on a large network of public and private cultural infrastructures, whose broad range of competencies covers every aspect of modern cultural activities.
