French artist Olga Kisseliva has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the Te Ataata residency program. She will arrive in Auckland in August and develop EDEN her current research project.
The Cultural Office of the French Embassy in New Zealand and Auckland University of Technology (AUT)‘s Colab Research Centre began the programme in 2015, to build linkages, share knowledge and understanding between New Zealand and French creative technologies fields.
As the 2018 recipient of the Te Ataata residency program, Olga Kisseleva will arrive in Auckland in August. Over three months she will develop her current research project called EDEN and adapt it to the New Zealand environment.
As both an artist and a researcher, Olga Kisselava’s approach combines modern arts and contemporary sciences.
EDEN is a bio-artistic device that sparks and studies interactions between trees themselves and between trees and humans thanks to a specifically designed technology. During the residency, the artist will focus on Kauri trees: one of the longest-living tree species in the world and historically found in Northland, Auckland and Waikato districts. Considered a national treasure in New Zealand, Kauri trees are now an endangered species.
As a plastic artist, Olga Kisseleva has achieved a national and international recognition in the field of contemporary arts. Also Professor and Director of the Art & Sciences Department and of the Art & Medium program at Panthéon – Sorbonne University, Olga Kisseleva explores the links between creation processes and contemporary sciences and technologies.
Her artistic work has been rewarded on many occasions and is part of some of the most prestigious museum’s collections, such as Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (France), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Getty Center in Los Angeles, among others.

About Te Ataata
Te Ataata is a 3-month residency programme for a French creative practitioner/s hosted at Colab at AUT in Auckland. Applicants may come from an art, design or engineering background, and must demonstrate a strong engagement in new media and hybrid practices. The residency aims to enable the development of new initiatives and joint collaborations on topics of mutual interest. An expected outcome is the building of longer term relationships between Colab and French institutions as well as between New Zealand and French artists, through an international network of creative practitioners and thinkers.
About Colab
Colab is a collaboratory for creative technologies research, teaching and experimental practice at Auckland University of Technology. Colab is engaged in both academic and public programmes, supporting the development and showcasing of digital and new media art forms and linking with key cultural and scientific organisations to foster and promote dialogue and exchange. Colab hosts a number of advanced technology labs and research groups with expert technicians that can be accessed to support research, development and collaboration during the residency.
